Oxnard ER room closes to treat mold
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Information from: Sign On San Diego
August 8, 2007
OXNARD ? St. John's Regional Medical Center closed its
emergency room on Wednesday as it prepared for a
full-scale shutdown later this month to be fumigated for
a chronic mold problem.
?As of this morning, the ambulances have been taking
people ... to other facilities,? hospital spokeswoman
Rita O'Connor said.
The ER shutdown was approved on Tuesday by the
California Department of Public Health.
The emergency room was the busiest in Ventura County,
handling more than 45,000 patients last year.
After remaining patients are moved to other hospitals,
the entire 265-bed facility will be closed on Aug. 14 so
that it can be tented and fumigated with chlorine
dioxide gas. The hospital plans to reopen on Aug. 24,
O'Connor said.
"No cases of mold-related illnesses have been reported,"
she said.
The hospital has been treating mold on a piecemeal basis
for about six years but that method was too slow and a
full-scale method was sought.
?It would be another five (years) if it continued with
the current process,? O'Connor said.
The hospital also has been replacing its roof and
resealing building exteriors to prevent water from
seeping in and creating the mold, she said.
